Surgery Risks
There are always risks to any surgical procedure that is undertaken
and the amount of risk depends upon each individual case and the
surgery being performed. These risks are assessed and discussed
at great length for each and every patient by the Consultant Surgeon
and Anaethetist.
Below is a list of some of the potential risks that may occur
during or post operatively
- Infection
- Blood loss
- Heart attack or stroke
- Reaction to drugs used during anaesthetic
- Blood clot formation in legs or lungs (deep vein thrombosis(DVT)
or pulmonary embolism PE)
- Gastrointestinal leak
- Renal/kidney failure
- Leak from staples or breakdown of intestinal pouch
- Death
- Nausea and vomiting
- Dumping syndrome (food moving through intestines quickly
causing abdominal pain)
- Depression/low mood
- Heartburn
- Gallstones
It is normal for patients not to have any of the above complications
but it is our responsibility for us to warn you that they sometimes
do occur. Please discuss any concerns with your surgeon and he/she
will be glad to explore your likelihood of any of the above occurring.
Each patient is different and it is very difficult to generalize.
We treat our patients as individuals and every one of them is unique
with differing needs and concerns. |
